The LPW kitchen and education room will become a ink lab! Reflecting on her exhibition at LPW ‘A Colourful Path’, Sumiko will share her research of pigment and ink making, and its application to drawing and printmaking. The group will collectively make avocado ink and lake pigment, then individually make mokuhanga prints. Discover the exciting process of experimental plant-based ink and printmaking and produce sensitive works that reflect the full beauty of the process and materials working in harmony.

• Make mokuhanga printing using handmade avocado paste pigment.
• See demonstration of making oil-based inks for relief and intaglio printmaking.
Course Structure
Day 1:
Introduction and brief talk about the research
Make dye liquid from avocado stones in LPW kitchen
Make drawing ink from the dye liquid, experiment with modifier and use it on paper.
Lunch
Introduction to mokuhanga and demo cutting wood
Make mokuhanga block (cutting blocks)
Introduction and demo of lake pigment making
Clean, tidy and pack up
Day 2:
Harvest the lake paste pigment
Continue cutting woodblocks
Intro and demo printing mokuhanga
Print the blocks using the handmade avocado paste pigment
Lunch
Demo of making powder form of pigment and oil-based intaglio/relief inks
Try using the oil-based ink (wood type or drypoint - TBC)
Cleaning up and tidy up
About the Tutor
Sumiko Eadon is an artist based in Leicestershire working individually and collaboratively. She studied Fine Art in Loughborough University as a mature student. Since her graduation in 2013, she has developed her portfolio through residencies and has exhibited regionally and beyond. This includes AA2A at the University of Derby, LPW’s ‘Our Big Move’ residency, Surface Gallery graduate residency, Nottingham Castle Open, Flourish Award exhibition, the National Original Print Exhibition, London and a solo exhibition at New Art Exchange, Nottingham. She works as a freelance printmaking tutor and has worked with LPW, West Yorkshire Print Workshop, LU Arts and The New Art Gallery Walsall.

Leicester Print Workshop
Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.
We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
