Wooden Type Morning Taster

This taster session will be an introduction to the workshop’s beautiful collection of wooden type. No type setting skills are needed. We will be using the letters to create a word or very short phrase but will also be considering how the meaning of a word can be expressed through the size of the letters, colour, layout, and repetition. This is a session for experimentation and to enjoy using these bold and tactile letters with their many design possibilities.

Course Structure

-The focus of the workshop will to be to learn how to layout, ink up and print by hand your chosen word.

-We will also consider how to express the meaning of the word using page layout, text size and ink colour etc.

-There will be full demonstrations of each stage

-We will be working with the larger wooden type and printing on A3 paper- Introduction to the workshop. Look at examples of printed text

-A demonstration of how to select, lay out, ink and print the wooden type.

- Begin thinking of suitable words and looking at type. Make a selection of 2 or 3 words.

- Begin to ink up and print words

- Demonstration and discussion of how to use the wooden type in a variety of ways to express meaning and explore how to create abstract designs and patterns.

About the Tutor

Sally Stephens uses the intaglio processes of etching and drypoint in her practice and also some screen print. Her work frequently explores the human face and its enduring fascination. Crowds and collections of faces provide a way to think about how the individual relates to a group, and consider the connections between people. Work is also inspired by travel and encountered images, for example Greek and Roman sculpture and busy city streets.

Sally has completed an Advanced Diploma in Printmaking at Central St Martins School of Art and an M A in printmaking at Northampton University. Sally is part of the LPW tutor team and has also delivered several community projects.
