This two week Letterpress course allows participants to explore both wooden and lead type to create layered prints that mix play and a more formal understanding of this very popular print technique. It might be helpful to already have done a taster, Intro course or have a little experience with Letterpress but it is not wholly necessary as all steps will be clearly demoed and supported. However you will be encouraged to use the type in both a formal and informal way.
Wooden type will be used to create a background layer, alongside experimental use of decorative borders, the backs of lead type and lots of informal relief printing to create a monoprinted and informal, loose set of works that will then be elevated with judicious use of a lead type layer dropped on top. Time will be taken to explore the relationship of these two tensions – play and formality – aswell as use of colour between the layers to produce truly unique and satisfying prints.
You will be working in a small group of six and will be working with a selection of lovely papers which means your final work will show all the potential and beauty of Letterpress.
