Soraya Smithson
I studied Fine Art at Middlesex Polytechnic in the 1980s and did an MA at Northumbria University in the early 1990s. I have been an active member of Leicester Print Workshop since 2001.
As well as printmaking I produce paintings, sewn work, ceramics and make sculptures and collages from tin and paper. I utilize all the print mediums available in the workshop, and mix and match print techniques and materials depending on the idea that I am working on.
The process of printmaking imposes a discipline. The restrictions of the process and of following a technique concentrate the mind. The rules of the process, and the colour and tonal constraints paradoxically encourage experimentation and a rebellion against the prescribed methodology and conventions. I seek to explore and exploit line and form to express the ordinary and everyday of life from my personal quirky angle.
