Light Up
A project to celebrate friendship, festivity and light

In Autumn 2015 Leicester Print Workshop worked with partners in the Highfields area of the City on a project called Light Up, designed to explore and celebrate themes of light, friendship and festivity.

During September and October, LPW Artist and Studio and Outreach Worker Serena Smith taught printmaking techniques to groups of young people at Moat Community College, Sparkenhoe Primary School, Highfields Library and St Denys Church. To coincide with Diwali, the participants used these techniques to make light inspired objects, which they were able to then take away as decorations and gifts.

Other items resulting from the workshops were used to create Constellation, a collaborative artwork that was installed in the exhibition space at our new building in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter in November 2015.

The project concluded with an event as part of the Launch Weekend for our new St George St Studio on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November. Participants and their families were invited, as well as our other neighbours from the Highfields area of the city from which we recently moved. Visitors were not only be able to see Constellation in our brand new education space, but they were able to take part in a drop-in Light Up workshop, producing light inspired decorations to take away.

This project was part of Leicester City Council’s Diwali Celebrations funded through its Culture 2015 programme.
