The New Custodian

The New Custodian
LPW Gallery 2
9th February – 4th May 2019

The New Custodian is a project devised by artist Theo Miller. He will be restoring a circa 1840s Columbian Printing Press here at LPW from February to May 2019.

For three months, Gallery 2 is taking the form of a temporary conservator’s studio. During this time, Theo will be working with young people from The Y Leicester, providing an opportunity for them to learn, create and participate in a heritage focused project. The whole project will be documented by award-winning freelance filmmaker Bill Newsinger.

As an artist, Theo works with and subverts the histories and legacies of printmaking – both culturally and socially. Almost all printmaking techniques were invented as industrial and commercial processes to enable and ease the sharing of information, however as the industry developed, these techniques moved into the realm of the artist. Though antique by age, under the care of The New Custodian, this press will be able to function one again.

Participants will not only learn about the mechanical heritage of the press, they will also have the chance to explore and combine traditions relief printing methods with modern technology such as 3D printing and laser cutting, to produce their own artwork and contribute to this new contemporary artwork. Through The New Custodian, the press is transformed from a production device, becoming part of the artwork itself.

This project has made possible by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund through Leicester’s Y Heritage project, part of their pioneering “Kick the Dust” programme, which aims to engage young people with heritage.
