Out of the Woods - Gallery 1

Out of the Woods
Nick Mobbs & Serena Smith
LPW Galleries 1 & 2
10th August – 2nd November 2019

Artists Nick Mobbs and Serena Smith share a dual fascination with the woodland environment and the role of pattern generation in their working methods. Photography, digital tools and printmaking are used in combination in both artists’ practices, as technical processes through which they ‘translate’, or encrypt, their source materials. This exhibition has grown from an ongoing conversation between the artists; through which they have been exploring the visual connections in their artwork, and the common ground they share in the conceptual development of their work.

For both artists, the interruption to the imagery the pattern provides becomes a means through which to reflect on their relationships with the natural environment. Smith creates her imagery through a combination of digital photography and hand drawn ornament – a process of inscription informed by language, that embeds aspects of her local environment within the work. Mobbs’ process involves digital pattern generation within and over his source imagery, providing a disconnect, a virtual screen, between us and nature. For both artists, the results are works which straddle the border of abstraction and representation and take these woodland images from the ‘real’, to the ‘virtual’, and back again.

The main gallery shows a selection of work, including a collaborative piece produced as an unlimited edition for viewers to take away. Gallery 2 contains items from the artists’ idea generation processes and media experimentation.
