Aspects of Print
Roy Bizley (1930 – 1999)

Showing at The Print Room at LCB Depot
25th January – 12th May 2018

The exhibition, staged over two venues, brings together two aspects of Bizley’s work, the Icelandic landscapes inspired so much of his work, and a series of prints which explore his process of creating a print.

Leicester Print Workshop is delighted to present a selection of prints by the artist Roy Bizley. The work in this exhibition has been selected from a collection of prints produced throughout his career, donated to LPW by the artist’s family.

A perpetual educator in his lifetime, this exhibition presents a rare opportunity to see the plates that Roy printed from and to get a glimpse of his process of conceiving a print and working through an image, from block to final print.

This print has been made using up to five plates. A woodblock plate has been cut into 4 pieces, jigsaw style, allowing each block to be inked up separately in different colours. In addition to this, extra colour has been added by using lino. Each proof is annotated to show stages of experimentation, as colours are added and layered block by block to create new shades and combinations. This remixing of an image is something that defines printmaking aside from other processes. When the image making is complete, the finished print is signed.

Roy Bizley was born in Swindon in 1930 and began his artistic training at Swindon School of Art before attending the Slade School of Fine Art between 1954 -56. In 1964 Roy moved to Leicester and began a teaching post at Leicester Polytechnic. He was instrumental in establishing the Printmaking Department in what would later become De Montfort University. Respectful of tradition and craft, he was also dedicated to fresh invention and innovation, prioritising vision over means.
