Congratulations to LPW Artists Sarah Kirby and Soraya Smithson, whose banner, made here at LPW to celebrate the life of Leicester Suffragette Alice Hawkins made the cover of The Guardian today.

The banner was produced here at LPW and was used by Elaine Pantling, aka one-woman theatre company Laurielorry, as part of her performance celebrating Alice’s life, In Her Shoes.

In Her Shoes tells Alice’s story and celebrates the life of this mother of six, shoe machinist, equal rights activist and suffragette.

The banner was printed, sewn and assembled by Sarah and Soraya on our new textile table upstairs at LPW in Studio 9. It was made entirely by hand cut stencils and silkscreen.

A 7ft bronze statue of Alice Hawkins was officially unveiled in Leicester’s new market square yesterday.

The unveiling was preceded by a mass procession, led by Elaine Pantling, who played the part of Alice Hawkins, flanked by hundreds of women and men, and the banner. Elaine says: “It’s been an absolute privilege to walk in Alice’s shoes.”
